RPAS - Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems

So you want to fly your UAV Professionally?

 We have made the process easy just follow the below guides.

First lets define the types of Qualifications or Certifications that CASA recognises:

To fly a Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) / Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for commercial work either a Remote Pilot Certificate or a UAV Controllers Certificate is required. These certificates apply to the individual who would be employed by a UAS Operator Certificate (UOC) holder for commercial work operations

This means that if your business fly's UAV's  for commercial reward you or an employee needs a UAV Operators Certificate (UOC)

 

 UAV controllers certificate

Allows holder to fly for an organisation that is UOC certified. Also enables the holder to be Chief Controller within a UOC certified organisation.

1. Obtain an ARN from CASA - Here

2. Join our 5-day RPAS training course focused entirely on the operation of a remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) and no PPL Theory exam required (see Remote Pilot Certificate section below). Once you complete step 2, skip step 3, unless you want to also be certified for the sub-20kg weight class. 

3. If you already have a PPL, skip step 2, and obtain your UAV Manufacturers Assessment Training for the RPA/UAV weight class you are going to apply for. UAV Manufacturers endorsement - We offer assessments for all Vulcan Products and DJI products and all Custom Built Drones.

4. Conduct 5 hours of flight time on the UAV system on which you were trained

5. Complete CASA form 1087 and submit it and all supporting documentation including Manufacturers Certificate to CLARC@casa.gov.au

 

UAV Operators Certificate (UOC) 

Allows an organisation to operate and employ certified pilots to fly UAV's for commercial gain

1. Obtain an ARN from CASA - Here

2.To apply for your UAV Operators Certificate (UOC), you have to develop

  • Operations Manual,
  • Flight Manual
  • Maintenance Manual

  • DAMP (drug & alcohol management plan)
  • Safety Management System (SMS)
  • Records management policy

3. Fill out Casa Form 041

4. You will need to nominate a Chief Controller in the submission. A Chief Controller is someone that holds a UAV controller Certificate

5. Send your submission to regservices@casa.gov.au including the required manuals and a complete CASA Form 041 more info can be found here

 

Remote Pilot Certificate

Allows holder to fly for an organisation that is UOC certified

1. Obtain an ARN from CASA - Here

2.The Remote Pilot Certificate enables people with no aviation experience through to experienced aviators the option of gaining a Certificate that is focused entirely on the operation of a remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS)

The course is competency based and comprises of a combination of theory and practical training. Upon successful completion of the course, the provider will apply to CASA on behalf of the trainee for a Remote Pilot Certificate.
